CALM - How to set your boundaries on a farm

Set Boundary of Footprint - in 3D:

Organisational Boundary
What you own, control
and/or have an equity share of

Operational Boundary
What you do in terms of
direct and indirect emissions.

Check list:

Department

Establishment

Undertaking (ie a number of establishments, eg company buildings - factories / offices/ other plant )

To Shelf (Retailers)

Transport - wagons / vans / cars

Subsidiaries

Check list:

Scope 1 Direct: Boilers / furnaces / petrol - oil - deisel driven operations

Scope 2 Indirect: Electricity

Scope 3 Indirect Use the check list below to help you decide relevant boundaries:

  • Activities that your organsaition used to carry out but are now outsourced
  • Materials that produce large quantities of GHGs and are a constituent part of any of your products (eg cement, aluminium)
  • Supply chain transportation and distribution
  • Product use/ waste disposal

Check your ideas with the
Operational Boundary game

There are not "correct" answers to many of the dilemnas you will soon find in terms of what to say is your footprint. Every organisation will have a unique footrpint. Provided you can make the boundaries clear, and why you chose them, you are fine. You can make changes to organisational boundary and scope, but this makes self-assessment more difficult.

Carbon Club Members can now go to the database and answer questions on boundaries

You will next start to measure all those direct and indirect emissions identified in your scoping within your boundaries.
This will determine your organisation's CARBON FOOTPRINT
