Count Indirect

Electricity

Your organisation's electricity supply will be metered by your utilities company - working out usage is therefore straightforward. You may wish to break down the supply to specific high energy using functions within the organisation. A quantity of your supply may be from renewable sources, this % may be deducted from your counting. Renewable Obligations Certificates in the UK represent a direct claim to emissions reductions resulting from renewable energy generation.

Task 2 Convert your metered electricity to carbon and deduct appropriate ROC figure

  • Check what Renewable Obligation Certificates your electricity supplier holds
  • Ask your electricity provider to supply confirmation of the percentage of energy they supply covered by their ROCs.
  • Deduct this % from your carbon score.

Task 3 Convert to carbon other indirect emissions from measurements acquired

Task 4 Add together your total Direct and Indirect Carbon figures - this is your carbon footprint
Users of your information will want to track and compare figures over a period of time.

Example: Air Travel

Find out the distances travelled by air. Use this. Type in: placename, country

Carbon comparator works out what your carbon footprint for air travel is in real terms.... and doesn't offer you a number of planted trees or few pounds to buy your consience, but spells out what you need to DO to make CO2 reductions equivalent to your flight emission.
Beware: carbon counters available on the web each use slightly different counting mechanisms - it is therefore possible to reduce your footprint in theory by merely switching to a different counter!
