Targets - direct and indirect

When you assessed your footprint in the last step, you will have identified those areas of highest energy use and greatest concern. Click through each of the issues in the left hand navigation - to 'plans'. This should help you decide what targets you ought to be setting.

You are not being asked to 'save the planet' on your own. Collectively we all make contributions that add up.

We recommend you strive for an overall target of 2.5% reduction per year - this is roughly the same as the expected decline in global oil production.

Everybody within your organisation, your supply chain and your stakeholders within your set boundaries, need to see and understand what the milestones of progress are. Everybody needs to feel involved rather than imposed upon.

Task 1 Look at the Scopes 1 (direct), 2 (electricity) and 3 (indirect) emissions you identified earlier within the boundaries you set. Select those areas with the highest emissions to target first.

Task 2 Check out your Environmental Management System and Quality System - are there targets set in these that would contribute to emissions reduction? Are there standard documents and proceedures you could use for your Carbon Counting Initiative?

Task 3 Liase with others across the organisation, and supply chain, broadcast what you are doing and get key personnel involved. Buyers, suppliers, distributors, product designers, estates managers, and others will have a vital role to play in suggesting ways to reduce emissions and help you to achieve your targets.

Task 4 Compile a list of people you will need to involve. Summarise why you have selected them, what expertise they bring and how you see them involved. Being clear about who and why you want specific people involved will help you to approach them and explain what you are doing.
